Developmental Editing

Price upon quote

Myra prides itself on thorough and personal developmental editing, and for such services, an editor will correspond with the client to craft the most effective approach possible. If you simply want our editor to make judgment calls, however, that’s fine too—no correspondence necessary. This step is most appropriate during early stages of the drafting process but can be useful for remedying specific structural concerns. Our editor will typically complete all copy editing related tasks during developmental edits but will also fix systematic issues and provide guidance on future modifications. The editor will attend to:

  • Dialogue
  • Use of literary devices
  • Authorial voice
  • Character development
  • Narrative arc
  • Pacing and tense
  • Event sequencing
  • Narrative holes or inconsistencies
  • Imagery
  • Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution
  • Consistency in tone
  • Suspense
  • Paragraph and sentence structure
  • Cliché

The developmental editor will also enhance readability and flow and implement appropriate additions and deletions. Please note that included with all manuscript edits will come a comprehensive feedback letter discussing changes and the editor’s overall impression of your manuscript. This letter will provide suggestions on approaches and future changes and will help you prepare your writing for its intended readership. Although this process is geared towards fiction, it can be adjusted for all writing types.

Common manuscripts submitted for developmental editing include novels, short stories, and poetry collections but also academic books, nonfiction books, and dissertations.

*Note that all editing will be completed using Microsoft Word™ Track Changes.
